Arriman has decided to marry. His wife must be a witch of the darkest powers... To find the most fiendish, he holds a spell-casting competition. Glamorous Olympia performs the Symphony of Death and conjures up a thousand plague-bearing rats. The magic of gentle Belladonna, the white witch, goes hopelessly wrong. She produces perfumed flowers instead of snakes. Bats roost in her hair instead of becoming blood-sucking vampires. Belladonna longs to be an evil enchantress - but how?

Arriman, awful Wizard of the North, sets out to locate a bride--a local witch. The text of this children's fantasy cries out for a British accent, both in syntax and setting and it would be difficult to imagine a reading superior to the one Prunella Scales provides. Characterizations are masterful consistent despite the broad cast of characters, many of whom require particularly irritating or loathsome qualities of voice. Her dead-pan delivery enhances the inherent humor of the text and a superb sense of timing elevates the tension. T.B. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine
