A classic masterwork of spiritual tension and realization from Paulo Coelho, this powerful story of one man's battle with self-doubt and fear is now available in a beautiful new package from HarperOne. An essential volume alongside Coelho's other bestselling and influential books, such as The Alchemist, The Pilgrimage, Brida, and The Winner Stands Alone, the searing and unforgettable narrative in The Valkyries asks the questions most central to all literature—and all of humanity's quest for understanding. Why is it that we destroy the things we love most? And how can we learn to let go of the past and believe in the future?

In a spiritual quest for his guardian angel, Paolo Coelho and his wife, Chris, set out into Arizona's Mojave Desert for 40 days and nights. Narrator Sean Runnette does a creditable job recounting Coelho's yearning for magic, his meeting with his personal mentor, and his decision to make this difficult journey in order to find the answers he needed. Coelho's storytelling ability is well served by Runette, who keeps things on an even keel as the couple's pilgrimage across the desert unfolds. From the mysterious Gene, who tells them that angels are "God's thoughts in live form," to their eventual meeting with the Valkyries, a group of women motorcyclists with mystical powers, Coelho's vision will appeal to those who believe angels are everywhere, watching over us.
