Gr 4-7-Two smoothly written portraits. Raatma focuses on Eisenhower's distinguished military career and victories in World War II. His presidency was devoted to pursuing peace and prosperity and his attempts to stem the tide of communism. Santella discusses Carter's Southern upbringing, his life as a peanut farmer, and his moral leadership. The text also points out his rise from "Jimmy Who?" to "Mr. President," as well as his successes and setbacks in the White House. The last chapter is devoted to his continued work for human rights, democracy, and health care, and ends with a mention of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which he and his wife were awarded in 1999. Both books have a casual, conversational tone and clear recounting of the facts. While Eisenhower is more straightforward and focused on major accomplishments, Carter is more sympathetic and tries to highlight some of the subject's underappreciated achievements. Still, both accounts are generally well balanced, full of detail, and logically organized. Black-and-white and full-color photographs appear on almost every page. Serviceable additions for readers who are unfamiliar with these men.-Kristen Oravec, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Strongsville, OH
