"Consider blocking out a few hours of uninterrupted reading time" for The Writer, #1 New York Times bestselling author James Patterson's "Excellent... perfectly executed ... genuinely suspenseful" (Booklist) thriller about a true-crime author swept up in a murder plot.
"Entertaining...one gonzo plot twist follows the next...loads of fun." (Publishers Weekly)

NYPD Detective Declan Shaw gets a call: How fast can you get to the Beresford building on Central Park West?

In the tower apartment, Shaw finds a woman waiting for him. She's covered in blood. A body is lying dead on the floor of the luxurious living room.

Every book in the apartment's floor-to-ceiling shelves is by the same author: bestselling true-crime writer Denise Morrow.

"This is you?" Shaw asks the woman. "You're a writer?"

Only one person knows the ending to this story. Is it the victim or the killer?

Bestselling authors Patterson and Barker team up for a biblio-tinged thriller. Details are scant, save for a bit about the plot: a famous true-crime writer is accused of killing her husband, and NYPD Detective Declan Shaw is on the case. The question is, is the writer controlling the plot or caught within it? With a 300K-copy first printing. Prepub Alert.

The Writer is probably the best novel to appear under Patterson's name in years. Its story is intriguing: a physician is murdered; his wife, a best-selling true-crime writer, is found near his body, covered in blood. To homicide cop Declan Shaw, it looks like a slam dunk. But the deeper he digs, the murkier the evidence becomes. Did the writer not kill her husband? Will Shaw be able to get to the truth? The writing here is excellent; readers of coauthor Barker's masterful 4MK series will note a similarity of approach to characterization, plot development, and dialogue. The authors frequently, and (we get the distinct impression) gleefully, send the story off in a new and entirely unexpected direction; there are several twists in the book, and they are all perfectly executed. Readers who like their thrillers to be predictable might feel out of their depth with this genuinely suspenseful, even shocking, novel. On the other hand, those who like the challenge of figuring out where the story's going before it gets there should consider blocking out a few hours of uninterrupted reading time.
