Grades 2-5 Guillain's love and fascination for the ocean is made beautifully clear here in accessible, lyrical words and images that burst with life. The author examines our oceans and their creatures at a series of levels, explaining in the introduction that the world's oceans are interlinked. The subsequent double-page spreads start off with large phenomena (how the moon causes tides, how one-sixth of Earth's fresh water pours into the Atlantic from the Amazon) before moving on to a microcosm: the mini-oceans--tide pools--that are left when the tide goes out and creatures are stranded till the moon allows the water to return. Various ecosystems are introduced--Canadian kelp forests, Florida's mangroves, Australia's Great Barrier Reef--making this a good pick for finding report topics. The Pacific garbage patch and global warming are both mentioned, but overall, the book maintains a tone of wonder and optimism. Smith's detailed, fabulously colorful illustrations often offer unexpectedly dramatic scenes, especially in the pages covering the darkness of the deep ocean. A strong pick for school and public library shelves.
