There are few works that have shaped our notion of the ideal society as much as Plato's The Republic. The most important of Plato's Dialogues The Republic is concerned with the construction of an ideal commonwealth and is therefore probably one of the earliest works dealing with utopianism. At the same time Plato questions the true nature of justice, wanders about what is a philosopher and examines the nature of the reality we perceive. More than that, a truly free thinker, Plato asks whether a just state can ever be divorced from a just individual and vice versa. A radical thinker operating at the very peak of his powers, Plato takes the reader through a tour-de-force of everything we have come to regard as the basis of our world and asks whether when things go awry the agency responsible, ultimately, is ourselves.
