The latest novel in the Saga of Recluce continues the story of Lerial, the second son of Kierdon, duke of Cigoerne. Lerial must navigate not only the complex and fascinating political scene around him but also the pitfalls of using magic in a world where the common man only speaks of magic in whispers. This tale continues to explore how the new empire Cigoerne is being built, and its relations with neighboring Heldya and Afrit. Tensions are high. Lerial must try to find a diplomatic solution while striving to understand the economics that underlay the political realities. Like most of the other novels in the series, this story stands on its own merits, introducing the reader to a world where order and chaos can be seen and used by magi. The world Lerial inhabits brings to mind the intricacies that existed in Europe during the Middle Ages: wealthy merchants, nobility, peasants, and near-constant wars and bickering among nations.
