Revealing legends and legacies, this activity book is a fun-filled review of the continent-sprawling ancient Inca culture. The activities, combined with an attractive layout, engage learners on a journey along the Inca Trail including the city of Cuzco and majestic Machu Picchu, built on a jagged ridge thousands of feet above the Urubamba River. Along the way, the beliefs, rituals, scientific advances, and unique system of languages come to life through 25 hands-on projects, such as creating Salar de Uyuni salt crystals and building a tropical cloud forest. This captivating educational tool also features unique illustrations, informative sidebars, fun-fact questions, and vocabulary that will engage learners from start to finish.

Gr 4-6-Students who have no prior knowledge of the Inca will learn much about this civilization in this lively volume that's chock-full of facts about such topics as religion, festivals and food, clothing and textiles, architecture, and the Spanish conquest. The Inca mastered their difficult Andean environment and handily overtook all would-be rivals, yet their empire flourished for only a few centuries. This title clearly explains how they accomplished all that they did-and why they ultimately fell into ruin. Overall, the activities aren't very interesting, useful, or particularly illustrative of the culture, customs, or traditions, and they aren't applicable to other studies. Children will likely most appreciate the activities relating to food and beverages. As such, this book should be considered an additional purchase.-Carol Goldman, Queens Library, NY
